Discover Kotija Jr. Taco Shop

If you’re cruising down the coast and suddenly craving real-deal Mexican food, Kotija Jr. Taco Shop at 852 N Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024, United States is the kind of spot that pulls you in without trying too hard. It’s casual, unfussy, and exactly what you want after a beach day or a long drive along Highway 101. I’ve stopped here more than once after surfing at Swami’s, and every time, the experience feels consistent-which, honestly, says a lot.

The first thing you notice is the laid-back diner vibe. It’s not flashy, but it’s clean, bright, and welcoming. The menu board is packed with familiar favorites: carne asada burritos, al pastor tacos, rolled tacos, enchiladas, and hefty breakfast burritos. What stands out is how generous the portions are. The California burrito, stuffed with grilled steak, crispy fries, cheese, and guacamole, easily feeds two if you’re not starving. The tortilla is warm and slightly toasted, and the meat is seasoned well without being salty-a balance that many quick-service taco shops miss.

From personal experience, their carne asada plate is one of the most reliable choices. The steak is grilled fresh, chopped into tender pieces, and served with rice, beans, and handmade-style tortillas. According to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, proper grilling and resting techniques help retain moisture and flavor in beef, and you can tell the kitchen understands this process. The meat isn’t dry or chewy; it’s juicy, with that slight char that adds depth. It’s a small detail, but it shows care in preparation.

The salsa bar deserves its own mention. There’s a range-from mild pico de gallo to a smoky red salsa that brings real heat. I once brought a friend who claims to be a salsa connoisseur, and he was impressed by the freshness. Fresh tomatoes, cilantro, and lime create that bright, sharp flavor you expect in authentic Mexican cuisine. The importance of fresh ingredients in traditional Mexican food is often emphasized by culinary authorities like the Mexican Gastronomy Council, which even supported UNESCO’s recognition of Mexican cuisine as Intangible Cultural Heritage. While this is a small taco shop in Encinitas, that focus on freshness definitely shows up in the flavors.

Breakfast here is another strong point. The chorizo and egg burrito has become a local favorite for a reason. The eggs are fluffy, the chorizo is savory with a hint of spice, and the potatoes add texture without overpowering the filling. I’ve noticed early morning foot traffic from construction workers, surfers, and families alike, which tells you something about its reputation in the neighborhood. Real-world reviews from regulars often highlight fast service and fair prices-two things that matter when you’re grabbing a quick bite before work.

In terms of service, the staff is straightforward and efficient. Orders are usually ready within minutes, even during lunch rush. While it’s not full table service, the counter team keeps things moving and gets details right. On one visit, I asked for no sour cream and extra guacamole, and the customization was spot-on. That kind of accuracy builds trust, especially for people with dietary preferences or restrictions.

Nutritionally speaking, Mexican fast-casual food can be indulgent, but you can also make balanced choices here. Opting for grilled chicken tacos with beans instead of fries is a lighter option. The beans provide fiber and plant-based protein, aligning with dietary guidance from organizations like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which recommends incorporating legumes for heart health. While exact nutritional data isn’t posted in-store, ingredient transparency seems clear based on what you see prepared in the open kitchen area.

Location-wise, being right on North Coast Highway 101 makes it easy to access whether you’re local or visiting Encinitas. Parking can be a little tight during peak hours, which is worth noting, but turnover is quick. If you’re planning a relaxed dine-in experience during the busiest dinner hours, you might need a bit of patience. That said, takeout is smooth and reliable.

Overall, the combination of hearty portions, authentic flavors, fast service, and a prime coastal location keeps people coming back. It’s not trying to reinvent Mexican food-it’s focused on doing the classics well. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you’re looking for when you scan a menu and just want something satisfying, flavorful, and dependable.

  • Super good food, plenty in a plate order, open salsa bar. Great price overall and especially in this part of town. PARKING on their premise!

  • I have had two Fish burritos so far and my husband has had a few also. They have always been great, with a lot of fish. It is our favorite place to get Fish burritos. My husband has had the Fish & Chips burrito which he likes a lot. The Nachos Supreme is large with a lot of meat. Kotija Jr. is not a fancy place to eat, so don’t expect the people behind the counter to wait on you like a server in a restaurant. They have always been decent and friendly, so I don’t know what other reviewers are talking about when they say they are rude or have an attitude.

  • Decent little taco shop right on the thorough fair. There is a small park to the North, and a couple of people tied their dogs there while they ate. The outdoor seating area overlooks the park. There are also seating areas right against 101 as well. Nice place to people watch while you wait for your food, if that's for your thing. The food was pretty expensive, but everything in the area is similarly priced. Food was quickly made, tasted great, and very filling. Not much more you can ask for!

  • Our go-to spot for years! Fish tacos are the best around and plenty of other great stuff on the menu. Great vibes, patio seating, soccer, and we always look forward to seeing Darinel and the team. Nicest and hardest working dudes!
